Sometimes effective and mindful breath-ing helps you maintain control of yourself and make it through a difficult situation. Your breath is a direct connection to your nervous system. When people are under stress, they take fast, short and shallow breaths. Since many of us are under stress at all times, we have developed an unconscious pattern of unhealthy breath. Even when the stress passes, we continue to breathe as if we are under stress. This keeps the sympathetic nervous systemthe fight or flight responsein over-drive. Breathing practices can be used to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. THE PACIFIC QUEST COOKBOOK57'
